Quick demo of a new song called “Don the Grados.” I’d like to somehow record strings (and some classical sounding piano) for the verses. For the instrumental coda, imagine it being longer with extensive lead guitar work (and intense drumming). You can download this track, and all of my music, at my Bandcamp (http://thehourglassorchestra.bandcamp.com/track/don-the-grados). This track is the first being attributed to Songs Without Drums, an ever-expanding “album” of solo-recorded demo tracks up for free download (all my stuff is free but not even allowing for pay option with these things since they’re just demos). Please give it a listen and share with me your thoughts. Lyrics below:

Hanged French billionaires,
You hang so low,
Your pocket squares
are just obscene.
They make me want to
Cut you down.

Help yourself to one
Or to a chair.
I have two tables,
But none are here.
The men don the grey suits
Here on Broadway.

March them through the rain
The Frenchmen strain
To hear the flies
Who drop in vain.
They had to die;
I suppose they did.

I saw the devil once,
He waltzed in grey
And walked the praying
Fields for the day.
He makes me want to
Cut you down.

“Jokes About Kafka”

[ lyrics ]

The old Exclusive Document website, where this file was hosted, no longer exists, so I have to repost. Recorded this a couple summers ago with a laptop microphone and a Skype headset. The vocals are kind of embarrassing.

“Orwell Plaza”

A near-final version of what’s probably my favorite song on the upcoming Hourglass Orchestra album, The Silent Era.

“Mourning Doves”

This song was thrown together piece by piece as I went along, but I rather like how it turned out, and it’ll be one of the tracks on The Silent Era when it comes out.

“Moscow 64”

Improvised guitar on tape. Should sound good with drums. Probably no vocals, maybe some talking samples.

A nice new version of the previous demo. Ethan Palmer on drums and piano.

“Cedar Hill”

Improvised demo. There is no actual battle of Cedar Hill, but it is the name of the cemetery where Wallace Stevens was buried.

“Ghost in Head”

[ lyrics ]

I almost went to sleep before finishing writing this song the night before, as it was 6am. I am really glad I chose to stay awake.

“Railroad Jive”

Random little demo. I have no idea what I was singing at the time. Not a bad riff.

“Resisting the Urge to Resist”

Demo recording of the song later performed by the Exclusive Document. Made on the Sony microcassette recorder my father used in the late 80s/early 90s when he was a wedding DJ to help him memorize name pronunciations.
